[00:00:01] Speaker A: Greetings, everyone. This is Moya with How Bette Davis Saved My Life with a new segment for how Bette Davis Saved my Life, life lessons from classic Hollywood called Late to the Party. As you can hear, the party's already started. And what I mean by Late to the Party is recent movies that Georgia and or I have recently seen and you've probably already seen, but we want to talk about. So sit back, relax and enjoy this brand new segment of how Betty Davis Saved My Life, life lessons from classic Hollywood called Late to the Party. Hello, everyone. And yes, thank you for being here again. It's so good to be with you. Live and direct and we're gonna get right into it, but it's not this next episode of Late to the Party. Thank you for coming. Don't forget to like subscribe and share comment and I'll, I'll put you on. Let's see what we, how we can get you to, to like what we got going on here. A little new color scheme. If we, if we have, we'll be honest about it. Let's get our brand color. Yeah, let's do that. Yes. So I talked about this last time that we, that this, this television show that's on the YouTube channel called the Age of Hypocrisy or Age of Hypocrisy. I'm sorry. And so I wanted to talk about this this time and classic British telly, that is who has it. Right. So on that show, it was fantastic because it just shows you that nothing changed. Nothing changes. We're still talking about the same issues, women's rights, reproductive rights, the age gap, the gender gap and everything. So the, the show, the series Jubilee, like I told you last time we were together, it charts Queen Elizabeth II from her coronation in 52 till 1977. So that with 25 year Spanish and in, in these series there's all kind of walks of life and everything going on. So it's different. And some of the episodes, they're, I, I prefer others over others. Last time we talked about Ramsey, which was fantastic. Go back and look at that episode. So this week we're going to talk about age of Hypocrisy and why I put in there. Mama didn't tell me that. So let me just jump right into it and share my screen about why I just really, absolutely loved this episode. It starts off and so it's, it's, but so this is by Faye Weldon, Fay Welding, you may know her, she wrote the, the she Devil movie from when Roseanne and Meryl Streep was in that in 89, but before that, in 86, I only saw the British. I. I never saw the American version. I saw the British version, and it was a miniseries. It was fantastic. So she wrote that and a whole bunch of other stuff. So go check. Go look at both of them. Maybe we'll do a comparison and later on. But that's where I know her from, from the she Devil series. But anyway, this. And I'm gonna come back to this scene. So Age of Hypocrisy starts off with this young woman, and she's right here combing her hair, and she says something to. This is her qu. Say, quote, unquote mother. And that triggers her. That. That scares her. Okay? And during all the. Throughout the course of the day. So here's. They're a married couple. All right? She's kind of relaying to him, and they're saying, why, you know, how long can we keep this a secret? When are we going to tell her? And. And, you know, why haven't we told her? You know, because the girl's like 14 or she's a teenager. All right? And so they revealed to her that she's actually adopted. And I got to get. Get her names. Let me see if I can find their names really quickly. It stars Gwen Wyford, John Carson, and Gwynette Strong. So it's. So Gwen Watford is Rita Iverson. She's the mother slash grandmother. Spoiler alert. They had to adopt their granddaughter from their daughter, who was a teen mom. Okay, so Gwen Watford. Let me share this. Let me share this, Gwen Watford. And I hope I will go back to what I was showing you on YouTube in a second. But anyway, she plays Rita. John Carson plays Terader. The Iversons. Gwyneth Strong plays Madeline. Madeline. I was Ivers son and the daughter. So she plays the granddaughter and the daughter. And Amanda Boxer plays Ellen. And I'm gonna get into her in a minute. So there's Rita, Terry, Madeline, and Ellen. So it's mama, sl. Grandmother, dad slash granddad, daughter slash granddaughter. Okay. I hope y' all keep all that together. Okay? And Ellen, we'll talk about her in a second now. So. And I'm sorry. I. I always hope. Yeah, I think I did share. Share that. Anyway, so she. Y' all got it. Now, I hope I'm not being too confusing. She's actually their granddaughter. Okay, Madeline, we got that. Madeline is Rita and Terry's granddaughter because her mom had her when she was a teen. But they flash back until about how they actually got to this point, they had to go back and tell her the whole story. So he was running. So the flashback, you see, he's younger, youngish, kind of. He was running for a political office, parliament, I believe, to represent his area. His area. And had it gotten out that she was pregnant? Because he was. He was for the liberal. The liberal party. Okay? But this was the hypocrisy of it all. How liberal are you? Because they wanted. The whole issue, guys, was that they wanted Madeline, their daughter, okay? Because remember, it's a flashback to get rid of the baby because it was going to ruin his chances of being elected again. Hence age of hypocrisy. Because again, he was for the liberal progressives, but he ain't. Couldn't have been that liberal or progressive because there was this turmoil that, hey, you know, should we get rid of it? Should we keep it? This is going to ruin. But what about women's rights? And you know, so it's the same, same BS, guys, over and over and over again. All right, so when you look at this, please look at the dynamics. This was delicious. Between. Here's Ellen. She's like his campaign manager who he is having. I don't know how deep of an affair he's having with her, but it's. It's an affair. Okay, I don't know if, you know, they did the dirty, dirty, but it's nevertheless. And his wife. The exchanges are absolutely delicious. And so let's. I'm a fast forward. So here's Madeline. She confides in Ellen the pregnancy before she tells her parents. And let me just get that scene going. And you can just see the poor young ladies and turmoil. And you're like, well, where's the dad? Some young guy. No, a married whole man. Now this girl is about to start her career. She's about to go to. Is it a nursing school or teaching school? Teaching school. And some, some bum, a married man has knocked her up. But she blames her mother, Rita, because you're like, why didn't you tell me about this, about getting pregnant and my emotions and so she blamed her mother. And you know, kind of guys, back then people didn't really talk about that. Like now there's no excuse with the Internet and social media, like, who a three year old knows what time it is? Okay, but so she blames her, her mother for why this is, this is happening to her. All right? But she confides in Ellen. So Ellen, y', all, Ellen, I'll let you decide. Ellen is A modern woman, forward thinking modern woman. Like I said, she is having an affair under these people houses because she's staying in their house. This is their house. Campaign central. She's having in the house creeping with. With the man because she, she's doing a whole Monica Lewinsky. Right, okay. And so there's a lot of turmoil and what have you and should we keep it or not keep it. Well, spoiler alert. Obviously they, she. They kept the baby. But what I want you to focus on is the dynamics between the women between Rita, Ellen and Meline, but especially between Rita and Ellen. And there's a particular scene and, and she and I. Please listen to the speech of why. Let me see if I can far why she is pro Madeline getting rid of the baby. So if I can, I'll play a little bit of it for you. [00:10:02] Speaker B: It's nappies and broken nights and depression and not being able to meet boys and not being able to go out. [00:10:10] Speaker A: So she's telling Madeline, which she should not be talking to this young girl. This is. She has no business talking to this young lady. But I don't care. The little girl did come and confide in her. That's between her and her parents. Right? But she. So she's telling her, you heard, hey, you ain't no more fun for you. It's nothing but babies and poop and pooping, scooping and diapers. And look at Madeline's face. [00:10:34] Speaker B: It's not being able to get on with a career, never having any money for clothes and having endless rows with your parents. [00:10:42] Speaker A: All right, so again, she's a modern, forward thinking woman. And so she's trying to sell Madeline that hey, I'm only concerned for you. You need to get rid of it because. And then if you really cared about it, your, your, your dad, you would get rid of it. Right? Because you're not going to be able to do anything and you're going to stop him from doing things as well. I. E. You gonna stop my career. Now am I wrong about that? Guys, you let me know. Excuse me. Now moving forward again, she's in these people's house telling these, this girl is all right. And these people's marriage, you know, it's under a lot of strain. Like I said, he's running. He won a big, a big ball of shot shot caller. So pay attention to the dynamic between these two as well. Now they go back and forth, back and forth. Is she going to keep it? So look at that as well. But what I like what my favorite scenes this this man and Ellen in his wife's house. Look at this pole. And she knows. She's not stupid. The wife always knows. Right? So keep in mind. Keep in mind they are in. This is their house. And look what happens. The midnight creep. The midnight creeper. [00:12:12] Speaker B: Put in your way by the devil or the Conservative party to lose you the election. Do be careful. [00:12:22] Speaker A: So she's. She's like any scandal. Be careful because it's gonna ruin. Not because it's immoral, but it's gonna ruin your chances of winning. I love, hate her because she's real. At least she's honest. Okay, Honestly wrong and immoral. But at least she's. Now why is he in her room in his house? His wife is like a room away and his daughter. [00:12:55] Speaker B: What's the matter? [00:12:57] Speaker A: I've been quarreling with Rita. Not used to it. It frightens me. I'm going to stop it right there cuz I don't want any spoiler. I want you all to go and look at this scene. Okay? Look. But look at the whole thing. But I want you to see how this plays out. This and Ramsey. And so far in this jubilee series, in my opinion it has been the best. The. The best two. There were some other ones, but these were the best two. Please go and check those out. Let me know what you think. We are still having the same freaking political arguments that we've been having forever. Why hasn't anything changed? Can you tell me? Let me know what you think in the. In the comments. Please let me know what you think because it's absolutely ridiculous to me. Hold on, hold on. You know, I still haven't gotten yet how to time this because you put it up and it just bogarts in. But age of hypocrisy, 1977 is great to look at all the nostalgia as well. So don't forget, this will be for our audio listeners. This will be next Saturday on. On the 23rd. You can listen to this. This will be on our YouTube channel. Monday we will be again, you and I. We will be back together again on the 30th. I have no idea because I've been making plans. But then I'll see something guys and I'll say oh wait, I gotta talk about this. So but you know, we always have a great time when we are together. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much for joining me. I appreciate it you guys. You are the best. Don't forget to like subscribe and share.
